TITLE: Transportation & Safety Trainer

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Conduct effective behind-the-wheel training and classroom instruction for drivers and assistants. Perform
maintenance and office duties. Serve as substitute driver, transporting students to and from school in a
safe manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. Must be at least 21 years of age with four (4) years driving experience
3. Two (2) years of experience driving a school bus/passenger bus
4. Possess and Maintain Class B Commercial Driver’s license with Passenger, School Bus and Air Brake
endorsements and clean driving record

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Conduct detailed pre- and post-trip inspection of buses to check and monitor the condition of the
bus, ensuring that it is safe to operate.
- Keep bus clean inside and out; sweep and mop floors and clean windows to ensure good visibility.
- Transport students to and from school and on special event trips in a safe manner.
- Assist special needs students with loading and unloading; operate wheelchair lift, and secure
students safely in the bus.
- Pick up and deliver students curb side in appropriate manner.
- Interact with students, maintaining good student/driver relationship; maintain order and ensure
safety and comfort of students.
- Complete misconduct forms, and if necessary prepare accident or injury reports.
- Educate and conduct bus evacuation drills for regular and special education students.
- Instruct new trainees on all facets of school bus driving; instruct other employees on the use and
care of related service equipment; train new employees in classroom and behind-the-wheel
training, and bus evacuation procedures, conduct agility testing, and driver behind the wheel
evaluations.
- Attend bus driver training programs to stay current on Federal and State Standards and keep
current certifications.
- Inspect buses for care, condition and operability and document information and report to
management and drivers.
- Conduct video surveillance for student management and driver investigations.
- Perform minor repairs to bus interiors, including seats, video systems and other special related
equipment.
- Manage inventory and stock of cleaning products, first aid products, body clean up kits, paper
products.
- Take district vehicles to emissions testing and repairs at different sites.
- Conduct mandated state road test on buses and issue written test in classroom training.
- Perform dispatch duties, answer phones, file, make copies, and perform other office duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

- Knowledge of safe driving practices and techniques and motor vehicle laws
- Knowledge of basic first aid procedures and methods
- Knowledge of safety and maintenance requirements of bus and other student transportation
equipment
- Knowledge in the safety practices and procedures for emergency evacuations
- Knowledge of effective classroom training techniques and preparation for presentations
- Knowledge in the use and operations of all related services equipment for special needs
students
- Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships
- Skill in both verbal and written communications
- Ability to operate a passenger bus and other district vehicles
- Ability to obtain Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger, School bus and Air brake
endorsements
- Ability to obtain a school bus driver certification
- Ability to obtain Department of Public Safety: Classroom and Behind the Wheel instructor certifications
- Ability to pass and maintain Department of Transportation Physical and/or Annual and random drug
screens and alcohol testing
- Ability to obtain first aid and CPR certification
- Ability to handle special needs children with physical impairments and in emotional situations.
- Ability to handle constant change with short notice
- Ability to make quick decisions, related to a child’s health and well being
- Ability to assist a child with limited ability on and off the school bus
- Ability to handle verbal and possible physical challenges
- Ability to manage students, often simultaneously, with various disabilities such as: Emotional,
Physical, Mental, Visual, Hearing, Learning, Non-Verbal, Behavior, Medically Fragile and
Multi disabled

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Dangerous machinery and or hazardous chemicals
Exposure to extreme weather conditions
Potential physical harm and verbal abuse
Highly exposed to body fluids, germs, and lack of personal cleanliness

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Lift, push, pull or carry students or heavy items of 50 pounds or greater
Repetitively enter and exit the bus by use of stairs
Bend, stoop, twist
