TEMPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
TITLE: Transportation and Safety Specialist
JOB DESCRIPTION:
To assist the Director and Supervisor in operation of the department. Act as a liaison between the
Transportation Department and other district departments, schools and parents. Plan and review school
bus transportation routes and schedules for district students using routing software also working with
Maricopa County maps, including adding street segments and address ranges.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. Minimum of one (1) year of experience driving a school bus, routing students, and conducting training
3. Computer and word processing experience
4. State of Arizona Identity Verified (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card
5. Must meet and maintain same requirements as a school bus driver
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
? Serve as an advisor to the Director, the Supervisor and all district administration on matters relating
to general education and special education and special education transportation.
? Conduct safety inspections on school bus passenger safety devices including harnesses, seat
belts, car seats, wheelchair tie downs, emergency blankets, restraints, shields, and belt cutters.
? Conduct hands on and classroom training.
? Manage School Bus Emergency evacuation schedule.
? Maintain data on special education students and McKinney-Vento students.
? Create and maintain bus stops, routes and database lists for drivers.
? Create the most efficient and effective bus routes.
? Work with general education and special education transportation staff to resolve student issues.
? Meet with drivers and assistants on issues relating to students.
? Review bus surveillance video.
? Responsible for ACCHS-eligible client record keeping and reporting.
? Perform relief for other department positions, e.g. dispatch, driver and assistant duties.
? Screen phone calls and respond to parent complaints, bus stop complaints or general questions
and direct questions to appropriate person when necessary.
? Perform general office duties such as copy, create and maintain department calendars, and input
employee data.
? Substitute as a bus driver/assistant as needed.
? Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
? Knowledge of safe driving practices and techniques
? Knowledge of policies and procedures related to Special Education students
? Knowledge of basic office procedures and equipment ? Knowledge of transportation vehicle routing and scheduling
? Skill and experience preparing and conducting training and classes
? Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications, including transportation
routing
? Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships
? Skill in both verbal and written communications
? Ability to operate a passenger bus
? Ability to obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Passenger, and school bus
endorsements, and Department of Public Safety School Bus Certification
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Dangerous machinery
Exposure to extreme weather conditions
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Lift, move, or carry up to 50 pounds of materials
Bend, stoop, climb, enter and exit bus by use of steps
Drive District vehicle
