TEMPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
TITLE: Payroll Specialist
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assist the payroll department in the processing of employee information for bi-weekly payroll, answering
employee questions regarding pay and deductions, and working with the schools and departments to
facilitate the pay process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. One (1) year of basic accounting, bookkeeping, and/or payroll experience on an automated system
3. State of Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the processing of the bi-weekly payroll in the system including running reports,
verifying data, printing and mailing checks and maintaining payroll files.
- Verify information input into system for new and existing employees regarding personal
information, salary, benefits and deductions.
- Assist and respond to questions regarding employee pay and deductions.
- Assist with preparing bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as needed.
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of the payroll department.
- Input and maintain payroll information for tracking and reporting purposes as needed.
- Answer phones and questions, and assist the payroll staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
- Knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping methods, practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of computer accounting software.
- Knowledge of public relations/customer service methods and practices
- Knowledge of District, federal and state rules and regulations related to payroll as it pertains to
time accounting
- Skill accurately and timely entering data information into Human Resources/Payroll databases
- Skill utilizing computer databases to develop reports
- Skill utilizing customer service techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints
- Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Fast paced general office environment
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Position may require climbing, stooping, standing, walking, lifting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and
eyestrain, with repetitive motions.
Repetitive motion and eye strain through extensive utilization of computer hardware and software
Position may require lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying furniture, equipment and supplies
weighing up to 60 pounds.
May be required to travel to in and out-of-district sites.
