TEMPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

TITLE: Carpenter

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Perform miscellaneous skilled carpentry type work in the construction, maintenance and repair of building
structures and related facilities and equipment. Perform duties in collaboration with other trades and
contractors as required in order to maintain District facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. Five (5) years of carpentry experience in the construction, maintenance, and installation of
commercial buildings.
3. Must possess a Valid Arizona Driver’s License.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Install and maintain doors and hardware such as panic devices, cylindrical locks, door closers,
and automatic door openers.
- Re-pin locks, cylinders and cut keys.
- Install, dry erase boards, projector screens, bulletin boards, and bookcases.
- Install wood or metal doors and frames.
- Repair gymnasium bleachers, furniture, cabinets, cafeteria tables, and desks.
- Install or repair vinyl composition tile and carpet.
- Design, fabricate and repair furniture and equipment.
- Build wood and steel stud walls, and floor structures.
- Install drywall.
- Design and cost estimating on commercial building projects and oversee projects.
- Operate woodworking machinery.
- Ensure that tools and equipment are properly cared for.
- Maintain accurate records on time, labor and materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

- Knowledge of general lock-smithing practices
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials common to the carpentry trade
- Knowledge of carpentry techniques
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and use of personal protective equipment.
- Skill in the construction, repair, restoration and installation of wood or related materials
- Skill in estimating time and material of assigned projects.
- Skill in both verbal and written communication
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
- Ability to perform skilled carpentry tasks involving the maintenance and repair of commercial
buildings.
- Ability to obtain level III asbestos certification - Ability to manage projects
- Ability to read blueprints and work from plans and specifications
- Ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Dangerous machinery and hazardous chemicals.
Potential physical harm
Exposure to extreme weather conditions
Restricted movement, dirty environment

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Bend, stoop, reach
Lift, move, or carry up to 80 pounds of materials
Climb to various heights and work in confined spaces
Standing for prolonged periods of time.
Operate District vehicle
