TEMPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
TITLE: Teacher - PALS (Special Education Self Contained)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
To create a flexible program favorable to learning and personal growth for the student in the least
restrictive environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Arizona Special Education Cross Categorical Teacher certification, or Arizona Special Education
Teacher certification with ID/MR or ED special area
2. Master Degree in special Education (preferred)
3. Knowledge of special education laws, procedures, practices, materials, equipment, and
compliance standards required to provide appropriate learning experiences for special education
students. Good knowledge of the nature and effects of the impairment(s) in all areas of disability
4. Ability to assess needs, develop and implement the IEP, and evaluate outcomes in specialty
5. Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents and the
community; excellent human relations skills; skill in both oral and written communication; ability
to work in multicultural environment with diverse population of students, staff, and parents
7. May be required to control certain behavior(s) through physical restraint
8. Maintain current NCI, First Aid, and CPR certification
9. Computer proficiency in district designated computer hardware and software including Microsoft
Office, MET and IEP software programs and other relevant software
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide direct instruction based on child’s IEP and the Arizona State Standards.
- Conduct appropriate academic evaluations; develop, implement and monitor appropriate
academic/behavioral individual education plans (IEP’s).
- Confer and consult with regular classroom teachers regarding student needs, interventions,
accommodations and student progress.
- Maintain accurate records for documentation of student progress and for compliance with district,
federal, and state guidelines.
- Participate in the MET process.
- Attend, plan, conduct and/or participate in all necessary training activities and department
meetings.
- Provide on-going consultation and support to teachers and teams in the development, design,
and implementation of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Positive Behavior Intervention
Plans for students experiencing difficulties.
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and
interpret the school program. - Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin
boards and interest centers.
- Maintain on-going communication (verbal and written) with parents of special education students.
- May be required to participate in student’s meetings that may occur beyond the staff’s work
assignment schedule.
- Follow state law and district policy with cases involving child abuse and neglect.
- Demonstrate willingness to be flexible and creative to meet individual student needs.
- Consult with staff members regarding interventions and accommodations for students.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service professional development activities
provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
- Direct activities and provide performance evaluation input regarding special education
instructional assistant(s) to school administrator.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
