TEMPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT
TITLE: Specialist - Hearing Impaired
JOB DESCRIPTION:
To work on an educational team developing, implementing, and monitoring programs favorable to
th
learning and personal growth for auditory impaired students (preschool through 8 grade) in the least
restrictive environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Arizona Special Education Teacher certification with Hearing Impaired special area
2. Master Degree in special Education (preferred)
3. C.E.D (Council on Education for the Deaf) National certification (preferred)
4. Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day as assigned
5. Ability to assess needs, develop and implement the IEP, and evaluate outcomes in specialty
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not
a comprehensive listing of all duties and responsibilities performed by the incumbents of this class.)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct appropriate language and academic evaluations; develop, implement and monitor
appropriate Individual Education Plans (IEP’s).
- Confer and consult with regular classroom teachers regarding student needs and progress.
- Maintain accurate records for documentation of student progress.
- Participate in the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) process.
- Plan, conduct and/or participate in in-service professional development activities.
- Maintain on-going communication (verbal and written) with parents of special education students.
- Direct activities of certified sign language interpreters and/or instructional assistants if applicable.
- Provide input to performance evaluation for certified sign language interpreters to administrators.
- May be required to participate in student’s meetings which occur beyond the staff’s work
assignment schedule.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
