TITLE: Social Worker-Site Based Safety Grant
JOB DESCRIPTION:

To promote and enhance the overall academic mission by providing services to students and their
families which strengthen home/school/community partnerships and alleviate barriers to learning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in social work (M.S.W.) from an accredited college or university (required by
grant);
- Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners or National Association of Social Work
license/certification (preferred).
- Standard School Social Worker, Pre-Kindergarten-12 Certificate from the Arizona Department of
Education (required by grant).
- Must have at least one of the following: (1) Completed 6 Semester Hours of practicum in a school
setting, (2) Worked 1 year in a setting that primarily served P-12 students, or (3) hold an out of
state school social worker certificate (required by grant).
- L.C.S.W. preferred
- One (1) year of successful social work experience (preferred)
- Obtain and maintain NCI, First Aid, and CPR certifications
- Knowledge of school, district, and community resources available for children and families
- Ability to assess family and student needs and provide intervention support
- Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents and the
community; excellent human relations skills; skill in both oral and written communication
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment with a diverse population of staff, students, and
parents
- Ability to develop and maintain required records and reports; good typing and computer literacy
skills (required)
- Must be able to maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s license and be able to drive between school(s)
and homes·
- Bilingual (preferred)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide short-term individual counseling and small group counseling to students ( i.e., maintain
professional documentation, facilitate referrals to appropriate agencies, respond to requests for
counseling in a timely manner)
- Provide direct social work assistance to children and their families (i.e. is available to meet with
parents and school staff as to determine student/family needs, make contacts with appropriate
agencies/resource/district social workers to address needs, follow through with parents and/or agencies to ensure services received, maintain documentation of services provided for
students/families)
- Develop and structure prevention curriculum and parent/staff training programs consistent with
current school needs and best practices ( i.e. Social Emotional Learning, Mental Health
Awareness, Bullying/Abuse Prevention, PBIS, Suicide Prevention, Drug Use Prevention)
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, staff, and community by providing support and
assistance with social/behavioral management, home visits, truancy, and referral to community
resources. (i.e., provide services as needed and requested, serves as a consultant role to school
and administrative staff, is readily available to assist school staff members as requested). It is
expected that the school social worker become familiar with community resources. Training will
be provided by district staff.
- Participate in crisis intervention services as requested by site administrators or Student Support
Director (i.e., respond in a timely manner to crisis situations, assume leadership or guidance roles
as requested, facilitate referrals to appropriate agencies for needed follow-up as appropriate,
member of threat assessment team, help with transitions in and out of school due to crisis,
suspension, etc.).
- Participate as a member of the Site Level School Safety Assessment and Prevention Team
(SSAPT) as required by the grant
- Act as a liaison between family, school, and community agencies.
- Conduct home visits to gather information, to assess family needs and/or to address attendance
problems as necessary.
- Make referrals for students and parents/guardians to appropriate resources within the school
community.
- Facilitate families’ understanding of school policies and help families utilize school services.
- Maintain daily calendar and student contact log to document services. Follow documentation
guidelines and collect data to determine effectiveness of services as required by the grant.
- Consult with parents/guardians on effective intervention strategies.
- Identify cultural, ethnic, financial, physical or emotional problems that might constitute a reason
for learning failure or problems in school functioning and provide support to alleviate barriers.
- Confer and work with school personnel regarding problems affecting the students’ academic
progress, behavior, and personal well-being.
- Work with families in exploring alternative school programs to meet students’ needs.
- Work with school personnel and community resources to develop and coordinate services to
meet the identified special needs of students.
- Provide intervention services to students and their families during crisis situations or as needed.
- Follow state law and district policies in cases involving child abuse and neglect.
- Maintain accurate records for compliance with district, federal, and state regulations.
- Conduct home visits to interview students and family members to assess needs, and to address
attendance problems, and assist family in accessing appropriate community resources.
