TEMPE ELEMENTARY

TITLE: Instructional Assistant - Regular Classroom PAY GRADE: 30

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assist teachers by performing activities in support of the classroom. Supervise students in various
settings including classroom, cafeteria, hallways and playground. Assist student with reading,
mathematics and other subjects as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. Associate degree, or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university or a passing score
on the ParaPro Assessment (required)
3. One (1) year of experience working with children (preferred)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act,

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist teachers with classroom duties by making copies, filing paperwork, working with students.
- Monitor and supervise students in classroom, playground and cafeteria settings.
- Prepare instructional materials, making visual aids, and photocopying.
- Prepare workstations or learning centers for children to work on daily lessons.
- Assist student with learning reading, writing and mathematics skills.
- Assess student needs and provide appropriate help.
- Meet with teachers to ensure lessons are appropriate for student.
- Organize and maintain teaching materials.
- Organize and file student work and plan for daily activities.
- Oversee class as required in teacher’s absence.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

? Knowledge of district policies and procedures affecting assigned work
? Skill assisting teachers with student learning
? Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
? Skill utilizing classroom supplies and equipment
? Ability to work with culturally diverse students

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position may require climbing, stooping, standing, walking, lifting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and
eyestrain, with repetitive motions.
Position may require lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying furniture, equipment and supplies weighing up to
25 pounds.
Position may be exposed to infectious disease.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Physical Demands such as:
Lifting
Pulling
Pushing
Standing for a prolonged period of time
Moving light weight furniture
Exposure (outside elements)
This position may require strength ability to push/pull 30-35 lbs.
The above physical demands may require assistance from other personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or GED is required. One (1) year of experience working with children is preferred.
Special Needs positions require certification in CPR and First Aid. The ability to speak fluent Spanish is
preferred.
