Instructional Assistant -
TITLE: PAY GRADE: 34
Special Needs

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Assist special education teachers with individualized instruction. Implement each child’s individualized
education plan (I.E.P.). Assist students with personal needs such as toiletry, feeding, adaptive equipment,
etc. Monitor student behavior.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED
2. An AA degree, or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, or a passing score on
the ParaPro Assessment (required)
3. Three (3) years of experience working with special needs children (preferred)
4. Certification in Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention, CPR, and First Aid and/or speak fluent
Spanish.
5. Special training in the use of adaptive equipment (may be required upon hire)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act,

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in one-on-one or small group instruction.
- Assist teacher in meeting individualized educational plan (I.E.P.) goals.
- Encourage children in their work.
- Perform behavior management, redirecting negative behaviors as required.
- Assist teacher with instruction, creation of classroom material and classroom set up.
- Assist and accompany student for inclusion in regular classroom.
- Modify assignments for student as needed.
- Monitor students on playground.
- Aid student with personal hygiene, including changing diapers and assisting with toilet training.
- Accompany students to cafeteria.
- Assist students in proper use of eating utensils and cafeteria behavior.
- Assist occupational therapist and speech therapist with teaching student as required.
- Provide a safe environment for special education students in which to learn.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Generally an indoor classroom setting
Position is exposed to infectious disease

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
May lift, pull, push or carry
May stand for a prolonged period of time
May move light weight furniture
Exposure (outside elements)
May require strength ability to push/pull 30-35 lbs.
Physical demands may require assistance from other personnel.
